Catherine's appointment was at 8:30 this morning. We drove from the Ronald McDonald House to the Wills Eye Hospital with little trouble. The waiting room was packed. Not your 10-15 people packed but your typical 30-50 people packed. There is more than one doctor in the practice, thank the Lord!
At about 11 we were brought back to a room that is about 3 feet wide and 15 feet long. There Catherine, Nicole and I had our eyes dilated and then we returned to our seats. At about 1 PM we were taken back to a room and we all had our eyes checked and the doctors went through Catherine's medical history. At about 2:30 we were asked to bring Catherine to another room for an ultrasound.
Finally, at about 3:15 the main doctor came to visit with about 5 of her associates. They re-dilated Catherine's eyes, held her down, held open her eyelids and did a thorough examination of both eyes.
The doctor confirmed that the eye must be removed. They didn't want to try any other approach given Catherine's other medical problems and conditions. The chemo would only make her more sick so the best answers is to remove the eye.
The plan now is to meet with a pediatric oncologist tomorrow to discuss a plan should Catherine need Chemotherapy (this would be done at Nationwide Children's at home). As of right now, they are hopeful that she won't. The tumor is contained inside her eye and they are hopeful that it hasn't moved up her optic nerve. On Wednesday or Thursday (we'll know which tomorrow) they will remove her eye. After removing the eye they will give her an artificial eye which they will attach to the muscle so that it will have some movement along with her good eye.
The other eye looks great and that is a wonderful thing too. We hope to be home on Thursday or Friday if things go well. We are so thankful for all of your prayers for her and us and we would ask that you continue to pray. It will be an anxious week after the operation as we await the results on whether it has spread or not. God Bless you all and thanks once again.
St. Peregrine, pray for us!
