A Temple of the Holy Spirit

Daniel & Catherine ready for Confirmation I had the privilege of witnessing my son and daughter receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this past Tuesday at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Lancaster, OH. It was a wonderful Mass with a full choir, trumpets, and all the rest. During his remarks, Bishop Earl K. Fernandes mentioned that we too, like the Basilica, are temples of the Lord. It caused me to reflect on this idea. Although I've mostly seen only pictures of the great cathedrals and basilicas in the world, I have seen some amazing churches even in our own diocese. These structures are a testament to the Church's love for God (read the entire Church - Militant, Suffering, Triumphant). They represent great skill, sacrifice, and passion for Our Lord and often times His Mother.  Yet the words of Christ always echo in my mind when contemplating the beauty that surrounds me in those places; “ Do you see these great buildings? Update from Mom Hahn

That's what the nurses, doctors, workers at the front desk, therapists, basically everyone at the hospital refers to me as...Mom Hahn. I like the ring to it, I think I'll try to get the boys to start calling me that...haha.


I have been spending a lot of time with Catherine lately because I have been able to breastfeed her! I also have to mention that the only reason I am able to do this is because Jim is doing such a wonderful job of taking care of the boys and the house, I am so grateful to him. Anyway, she is now taking the full amount of her feeds, so they allow me to nurse her for 2 of those feedings each day and once a day she is bottle fed. She still spits up occasionally so they are limiting what she is taking by mouth, but she doesn't seem to spit up after I breastfeed. They weigh her before I nurse her and they weigh her after and the difference is what she took by breast and then they give the rest of what she is supposed to get through her NG (nasogastric) tube. Today she took 24mL breastfeeding, that's about half of her feeding. And let me tell you, she is an excellent nurser! She is very active and interested and just very focused and into it. It does her mom good to see her enjoy it so much! She also took 28mL from a bottle this morning with the occupational therapist, but then she spit up about 10mL.


Hopefully she will continue to take more and more from the breast and bottle and then perhaps later on we can try what the nurse practitioner called a "sink or swim" day where they remove the NG tube and let her nurse on demand for 24-48 hours and just weigh her diapers to be sure she is getting enough.


Her doctor is very pleased with the progress she is making, even though it is very slow. One doctor told me that this is the nature of the NICU, very slow but steady progress. It is certainly to be expected after 2 major abdominal surgeries. The doctor is also very pleased with how she is progressing developmentally, as this is a concern with her chromosomal abnormality. Physical therapy is working with her visual tracking and her neck muscles and they report that she is making great progress!
