The Seasons: A Poem

Sunrise over Amazing Grasses Family Farm The mad Artist wields His brush, Painted colors rush, To life and give flush, Before the quiet autumn hush. The life seems to pour, As colors fall to the floor, To be seen no more, Outside the dark, grey door. Brightness from below, Sun upon the snow, High, cold clouds blow, Flakes and ice appear to grow. The man melts with little seen, Underneath, pale, grey green, Hides life in dark unseen, Waits for warmth and to careen. Buds on branches show, Patience starts to grow, Trickles, streams and veins flow, Bringing fruits of melted snow. Sprung to life it springs, Bees, birds, sound rings, Lush green flings, Its gift bounty brings. Green growth gives one last rush, Underneath the Painter's brush. 90 Day Adventure Through the Bible - Day 1

Read Genesis Chapter 1-4

Our adventure begins today and it begins in the beginning.  We are given two creation accounts.  The first, Genesis 1:1 - 2:3, gives us a broad overview of the creation of all that is.  We see this creation account from a great distance.  We see chaos and disorder become the cosmos and formed into a hierarchical order culminating with the creation of man.

While reading this creation story I'm reminded of C.S. Lewis' book in the Chronicle's of Narnia series, The Magician's Nephew.  In this book we are first introduced to the world of Narnia and we enter it as it's being created.  Aslan, the Christ figure, is in essence singing Narnia into being.  It's beautiful imagery of creation story.

While the first creation story gives us this broad, sky high view of creation, the second account is
more focused on the creation of man and woman.  This is something to pay attention to throughout all of our reading.  The authors often begin with an overview before zooming in on a particular story or detail.  For instance, the author may give a long, drawn-out genealogy before focusing in on a family or person.  This is important for us to know the backstory before zooming in on a particular point of focus.

In the story of the creation of Adam from the dust we read that God breathed the breath of life into him, into this "dust man".  It's interesting that there are only two instances in scripture where we read of God breathing on man.  Do you know the other instance?

Another interesting aspect of this second creation account is the creation of Eve.  We are told that God put Adam into a deep sleep, opened his side, and form the woman, his bride from a rib.  We can see here a foreshadowing of Jesus cast into the "deep sleep" of death in another garden, His side opened, and His bride, the Church, created from the blood and water the gushed forth.

As move on with the story we are introduced to the "serpent".  Our modern tendency is to read this as simply a "snake".  This is not the meaning of the original text.  We would be better of to replace serpent with "leviathan" or "dragon".  This was no garter snake.  He is sinister and intimidating.

After Adam and Eve are enticed to partake of the fruit of the garden sin enters the world.  I think that if we look carefully we can see all of the deadly sins entered the world at this time:

Be like God - PRIDE - 3:5
Desired to make one wise - ENVY - 3:6
Good for food (so were all of the other trees!) - GLUTTONY - 3:6
They knew they were naked - LUST - 3:7
Blaming each other - ANGER - 3:12-13
Taking more than allowed - GREED - 3:2-3, 3:6
Hid themselves from God and duties - SLOTH - 3:8

In the 4th chapter we find the story of Cain and Abel.  Why was Abel's offering accepted and Cain's not?  We are also introduced to the 3rd son of Adam and Eve, Seth.  Though Cain and Abel get all of the ink throughout history, it is Seth who we will follow as we continue the adventure following both God's blessing and Jesus' bloodline.
