Happy 16th Birthday Catherine Therese!!

Although you'll never read this my sweet Catherine, I love you. 16 years ago you changed our life forever. All of your siblings have done this in their own way but you have done so in a very special way. You have made me more empathetic, compassionate, and much more prayerful. Your smile lights up the world around you and we are all blessed by it.  It's not easy living with a saint. You remind me of my weakness and limited time on this earth. You challenge me to go deeper within myself and find what the Lord is trying to teach me...usually patience. You are made in His image and likeness but He uses you so that I can see my own beauty, goodness, and shortcomings.  You struggle mightily against me with every bath, diaper change, and wardrobe change. I struggle mightily with Him against all the changes He wills in my life. You depend on me and your mom for even the simplest of things. You teach me to depend on Him for everything and not rely on my on strength. You teach me that I

Wilderness Outreach and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Since 2009 I've been involved with Wilderness Outreach. It is a Catholic Men's organization that helps men become better men, husbands, fathers, brothers, deacons, and priests. This is accomplished primarily through work expeditions in the mountains of the American West building or repairing hiking and mule train trails for the United States Forest Service.

Wilderness Outreach forms men on these expeditions and through other opportunities by encouraging them to embrace their God-given masculine spirituality. The heart of Wilderness Outreach focuses on 5 specific aspects: Work - Worship - Brotherhood - Leadership - Asceticism. During time with Wilderness Outreach men are challenged to embrace these aspects and make them part of their daily hike with the Lord.

To help men embrace their particular vocation and understanding of what it means to be formed in the image of Jesus Christ, Wilderness Outreach has begun a series of podcasts (called ManCasts). Each week addresses an issue or event related to growth in the 5 aspects. Over time the podcast will cover various topics ranging from the spiritual life to self mastery and physical fitness and psychology.

After a few introductory episodes, the podcast has begun an in-depth journey through The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. After an overview of the habits, the episodes will cover each habit bringing to light it's lived experience, absence thereof, and ties to our Catholic Faith. I highly recommend you tune it to either the live broadcast or listen later on your favorite podcast app.  Here are some links to help you find the podcast.

For those of you unable to watch or listen and especially for those who have children and families, I would suggest you take a look at my series of posts here on the blog covering the 7 Habits. These will soon be transformed into a book/workbook format for families to use. However, you are welcome to check them out and work through the 7 Habits as a family.

Thanks for being on the journey with us and please pray for the success of the podcast and Wilderness Outreach.
