Mark 8:11-30
God lavishes graces upon us whether we know it or not. We may not think much about them, just as we don't give much consideration for the air we are currently breathing, but He pours them upon us nonetheless.
Psalm 127 tells us that all this God gives to his beloved in sleep. It is a gift. It is a present from a Father who loves us so very much.
As I was standing in the closet, buttoning my shirt this morning, I was overcome with a sense of thankfulness for simply being able to do that, button my shirt. This led me to think about all the things I am capable of doing that I take for granted.
I also began to think of the million little miracles that I see everyday - my children and their smiles, the snow, sounds, tastes, etc. When I take the time to think and thank, I see that my life is filled with signs, wonders, and miracles.
In today's Gospel Jesus flatly refuses to give a sign to the Pharisees when asked to do so. One might think that this would have been the perfect opportunity to "win them over" but Jesus knew their hearts. He knew that they refused to recognize the miracles He had already performed. If He were to indulge them it would make no difference. In their hardness of heart they would have found some way to discredit it.
Perhaps God does not work miracles. He is infinitely good and unchanging. His grace never stops flowing upon even the hardest of hearts. But, perhaps the things we call miracles are instances where we are finally able to see clearly and be fully open to the goodness of God.
FROM THE SAINTS -
"People travel to wonder at the height of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars... and they pass by themselves without wondering. "-- Saint Augustine
