The Seasons: A Poem

Sunrise over Amazing Grasses Family Farm The mad Artist wields His brush, Painted colors rush, To life and give flush, Before the quiet autumn hush. The life seems to pour, As colors fall to the floor, To be seen no more, Outside the dark, grey door. Brightness from below, Sun upon the snow, High, cold clouds blow, Flakes and ice appear to grow. The man melts with little seen, Underneath, pale, grey green, Hides life in dark unseen, Waits for warmth and to careen. Buds on branches show, Patience starts to grow, Trickles, streams and veins flow, Bringing fruits of melted snow. Sprung to life it springs, Bees, birds, sound rings, Lush green flings, Its gift bounty brings. Green growth gives one last rush, Underneath the Painter's brush. The mad Artist wields His brush, before the quiet autumn hush. More poetry is available from James M. Hahn in  The Last Dragon and Other Poems  available now. How to Siphon Water Off of a Winter Pool Cover

How to Siphon Water Off of a Winter Pool Cover

Each Spring many above-ground pool owners are excited to reopen and enjoy their pools.  However, one daunting task can be removing the winter cover.  These winter covers are designed to keep dirt, leaves, and other debris out of the clean, treated pool water.  The covers do their job well but Winter snow and Spring rain can deposit a large amount of water on the cover.  This water makes the cover difficult if not impossible to remove without spilling the contaminated water into the treated pool water.

Below you will find instructions for an easy way to remove this excess water from the cover without using buckets or expensive pumps.

What You Need

  • Garden Hose*

  • Active Water Spigot/Faucet

  • Gravity

*(Note: This hose should be long enough reach from the middle of your pool cover to your closest water faucet/spigot)

Siphoning the Water

  1. Attach the female/receiving end of the hose to the spigot.

  2. Stretch the hose to its full length into your yard, drive, or other suitable area for draining water.  The chosen area must allow the hose to rest at a level lower than the water on the cover.

  3. Take the free end of the hose and slide it onto the pool cover.

  4. Maneuver the hose end so that it is as close to the center of the pool cover as possible. (See Image)

  5. Secure the hose so that it remains in place with a brick or secure it to another object near the pool wall.

  6. Turn on the water from the spigot, through the hose and onto the pool cover.

  7. Allow the water to run until all air bubbles cease to emerge from the hose.

  8. Turn off the water from the spigot.

  9. Quickly remove the female/receiving end from the spigot, being careful to keep this end below the water level of the water on the cover.

  10. Move female/receiving end to the area designated to dispose of water and allow gravity to siphon water off of the pool cover to that area.

  11. If the siphoning stops or the hose is clogged with debris, reconnect the hose to the spigot and start again following steps 1,  and 5-10, until the pool cover is drained of water.

An Easy and Effective Method

This method of draining the water off of a winter cover is an easy, effective, and inexpensive method that any pool owner can use.  The method can also be used to lower the water level when preparing the pool for winter or if the pool needs to be drained for repairs.  The combination of a garden hose, a little water, and gravity makes for an easy method to move water from where it’s not wanted or needed.
